The Tooth Extraction Process

In today's best dental practices, dentists try to save their patients natural teeth.  Although the technology in the dental industry has improved immensely, there are still some instances where a Denver dentist cannot save a tooth.  A simple extraction is usually done by a dentist and more complicated extractions are usually performed by a more experience oral surgeon.
During a tooth extraction, a dentist will use anesthesia so you do not feel any pain during the procedure.  They may also put their patients 'under' with IV sedation.

The area around the extracted tooth will take 5 to 6 weeks to heal.  During this time, a dentist will typically place a temporary tooth so you wont walk around missing a tooth. After the extraction has healed you have a few options for dental implants.  Your dentist could install a permanent or 'fixed' implant or create a removable implant that secures to a metal post or frame.  Teeth color matching is one of the great things with new dental technologies.  Dentists are able to match your dental implant to the same color shade of your other teeth so others cannot tell you even have an implant or fake tooth!

After the Tooth Extraction
After a tooth is extracted, your dentist will want to replace it as soon as possible to help maintain the functionality of your mouth for eating, speaking, etc. With advances in technology, a permanent implant can replace your missing tooth relatively quick. Even if your only alternative is to have a removable denture, newer treatments exist to help secure the tooth so you can adapt to the denture easy and it wont effect your day to day activities.

  1. In only the most necessary and severe cases— such as when a tooth's roots are traumatized beyond the point of repair— would we suggest extracting a tooth in order to prepare for a restorative dental procedure, such as dentures or dental implants.
